My Mother Loves Her Animals and Me

My mother loves her animals and me;
And, of course, my sister's* in there, too.
She shows her love quite unmistakably:
She pets us all, no matter where or who.
I haven't sprouted yet a bushy tail,
Nor has my sister* grown a toothy snout;
But I sometimes feel a dog in such detail
I pant and bark and scurry all about.
But I am glad my mother has a love
That cuts across the paths of innocence.
I know that her sweet feelings long will move
Me to appreciate her scents!
*Feel free to change to "brother."
On Passing Air
On passing air
One turns around
To see if any
Heard the sound;
Then moves away
To vacate where
Another might
Inhale the air;
And then, relieved
In gut and soul,
Becomes again
A wholesome whole.

On Your Day Just Want to Say

On your day just want to say
That you can count on me
To be your friend until the end:
Just wait and you will see!
I know that you would be as true
To me for just as long.
No "if" or "but," no matter what,
Our friendship will be strong.
So, my dear, I'm glad you're here
To share my joy and pain.
I care so much, so keep in touch--
I'll talk to you again!
Once I'm in My Bubble Bath
Once I'm in my bubble bath
I like to stir up more.
Half the suds go in my eyes
And half go on the floor.
The fun is in the bubbles 'cause
They giggle on my skin,
And when I stick them on my face
They dangle from my chin.
And when I splash them hard enough
They pop and disappear,
And then my bath time's over 'cause
I've made the water clear.

Farewell, My Friend and Confidante

Farewell, my friend and confidante!
As you go, so must I
Return upon the well-worn path
Each soul must travel by.
Wend where you will, my wanderer,
Even as you stay
Long-treasured in my lonely heart,
Loved well, though far away.
Good Luck, My Dearest
Good luck, my dearest! Come what may,
Our love will be the sea
On which you sail to golden shores,
Darling of the wind!
Love will bear you on your way
Until you're back with me,
Come home to peace amid your wars,
King of all within.
Goodbye, My Darling Foster Child
Goodbye, my darling foster child,
On to another home!
Open doors remain behind.
Do but turn, and you will find
Bestride your heart, my own.
You may the wind, unwept and wild,
Embrace, but not alone.

Clarity Is Something That I Savored

Clarity is something that I savored,
Lending reason to a worthy cause.
An uncommitted life is not worth living,
Relinquishing the claims for the rewards,
Embracing the illusions of the favored.
Remember me as one who never wavered,
Obeying stubbornly the highest laws,
Defending what had little chance of winning,
Not caring for the consequence, or giving
Even one brief glance at waiting jaws,
Yet loving well the world for which I labored.
Could I But Give You Comfort at My Death
Could I but give you comfort in my death,
How might I tell you what you meant to me?
All I did, both night and day, was love you,
Rulers of my kingdom and my heart.
Like gods, at last you claimed my painful breath,
Opening the door to mystery,
The final gift of all the gifts you gave me,
Taking what I could no longer give you
Even if I tried with all my art.
Death Came to Me While I Was at a Meeting
Death came to me while I was at a meeting,
Opened up my chest and wandered in.
Nor did it leave until a few days later,
Satisfied it need not come again.
It was a death both unforeseen and fitting,
Living as I did for what I did,
Being one averse to merely being,
Engaged in service to the world I would.
Remember me, then, as I was when death
Made its sudden entrance to my heart:
Attentive in my seat, my wife beside me,
Night come, the meeting just about to start.
Ever I Loved You, Though I Could Not Have You
Ever I loved you, though I could not have you.
Most of my life was lived in Charlotte's shadow.
I stalked the house, meowing, muttering,
Love my joy, my burden, and my sorrow.
Yet not in silence did I do without you.

Engagement Is the Time Between

Engagement is the time between
Being two and one.
It moves so fast the mountains shift
Before the survey's done.
It's not a thing you can get used to,
Trying for a fit;
It's sheer uphill, the road to bliss,
And when you're there, that's it.
Exciting, thrilling, always new,
Full of joy and fear;
Things race by, yet move so slow
A month can take a year.
Love must wait, quite patiently,
To find its proper form;
Yet there it is, when we can look,
The peace within the storm.
Engagements Are by Nature Temporary
Engagements are by nature temporary,
A passageway to fields in which we'll grow.
But I have found this year of passage very
Much like the wedded world we soon will know.
There is a permanence in our relation
Drawn not from law or custom but from love.
This year has built a broad and firm foundation
That no hard rain will easily remove.
I am yours, though not quite yet your wife;
You are mine, with one more door ahead.
Soon, soon we will begin our brave new life,
Joined in thought and feeling, hearth and bed.
Till then we'll wait with patience and with pleasure.
This year of love with you I'll always treasure.
Obligations Open Many Doors
Obligations open many doors.
No joy is long sustained without some vows.
Years of passion sweep up many shores;
On love's soft strand life fewer waves allows.
Up to now you've looked, but now you've found,
Relying on your hearts to tell you when.
Each moment that your loved one's not around
Now creates a sweet, sad, wistful yen.
Go then together toward the nuptial gate,
Alight with all the hope of your desire.
Gifts are often engines of our fate,
Eclipsing undue caution with their fire.
May you long be blessed with fulfilled need,
Each from inner isolation freed;
Nor may that need diminish, even though
The love and joy you feel now overflow.

Our Grandson Tyler Was Just Over Seven

Our grandson Tyler was just over seven
When he died while eating supper in our home.
Two weeks earlier he'd talked of heaven,
And of how after death we're not alone.
His best friend said a prayer when he was buried,
And just as if he'd answered from the dead,
We heard the drone of planes high up, unhurried,
And saw the "missing man" fly overhead.
He left behind his mom and little brother,
Pappy, Emma, Uncle Bubba, too;
And ten months old, his baby cousin Jordan,
Who now does all the things he used to do.
We see him in her smile, her hands, her shoulders;
He quiets her and makes her more serene.
He comes to her at night, and to his brother,
And tells them of the wonders he has seen.
He tells them of a paradise of angels
Filled like a billion suns with love and glory,
And of the many souls arranged on stages
Waiting for the end of history;
And of the recent dead, who can return
To tell their loved ones what death has in store,
Who hang around that little ones might learn
The secrets of "life" on the other shore.
Recently I Dreamed I Talked to You
Recently I dreamed I talked to you.
You were in the desert, and you said
That I would never want for love, for you
Would love me now until the end of time.
I cannot think that you are wholly gone,
That one day you could simply be no more,
And it should come about that your bright soul
Would vanish like a rainbow in the darkness.
For me it is as if you were away,
Somewhere on a very long vacation.
And though I know you're dead, you do not seem
To be beyond the boundaries of my love.
Our souls do not abide in days or hours
But in a love that never, never ends.
You will be with me till life is over,
Then I with you somewhere beyond the stars.

Neither Mourn nor Celebrate

Neither Mourn nor Celebrate
Neither mourn nor celebrate
This day that fathers should be kings,
But let it be appropriate
To sing of sunlight sorrow brings.
This day that fathers should be kings
Our child's death has all undone.
To sing of sunlight sorrow brings
Brings back in tears our dearest one.
Our child's death has all undone
Our joy in life, and yet our pain
Brings back in tears our dearest one
That we might hold him once again.
All joy in life must end in pain,
So let it be appropriate
That we might hold him once again
And neither mourn nor celebrate.
Not a Day Goes By that I Don't Think of You
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you.
They say I should move on, but tell me, where?
Where such love as I have shared with you,
Such sweetness from such joy so many years?
There has to be some room for storing sorrow,
Some place to keep one's undivided pain,
Where past can still be present, though in shadow,
And I can hold you in my arms again.
Ah, darling! We will be together always,
Though you are dead, and I must live alone.
Time is nothing but an open window
To things more real, which you and I have known.
When we were married, we became one flesh;
So now in me you'll not return to dust.
On the Death of a Teacher
Now that you have entered the long silence,
Lying in state so long as I have life,
I lay my gratitude across your memory
Like flowers strewn across an open bier.
Not often does one soul ignite another
With such intensity as yours did mine.
I'm burning still with all your inner fire,
Humankind to your Promethean joy.
There is no gift so glowing I can give you,
Nor any way my love can reach your heart.
All I can do is pass your torch to someone
To whom the distant midnight mountains call.

I Would Be Proud of You, Could I Attend

I Would Be Proud of You, Could I Attend

I would be proud of you, could I attend,
Would I now know the things I'll never know,
Could I have watched you come to comprehend
The wonder of the world in which you grow.
Do not think I did not think of you,
Imagining the beauty of this day,
For I was at your graduation, too,
Though long ago, and in a different way.
Life can be full, no matter short or long,
As long as love can fill it with its grace.
And I have felt such pride, and love so strong,
That you will live your life in my embrace.
So of the pride today I claim my share:
Though I am not, I know that I am there.
I Would Not Be the Sun to End Your Night
I would not be the sun to end your night,
Nor would I be the wall to turn your tears.
But I will watch with you until it's light.
Because there are no words to set things right
Nor hopes that one immersed in mourning hears,
I would not be the sun to end your night,
Offering a wisdom far too bright
To soothe your pain or put to rest your fears.
But I will watch with you until it's light.
There must be time to grieve that sorrow might
Be equal to the love of days and years.
I would not be the sun to end your night.
For grief, before it breaks, must reach its height,
And tides must turn before one homeward steers.
But I will watch with you until it's light.
There are agonies no friendship can requite,
A bitterness unstained till dawn appears.
I would not be the sun to end your night.
But I will watch with you until it's light.

How Lucky to Have Had So Good a Father

How Lucky to Have Had So Good a Father
How lucky to have had so good a father!
On us his warm, unstinting sun long shone.
We were, of his hardworking life, the center,
Loved for the pure joy of love alone.
Uncanny are the requisites of pleasure,
Coming as they do within the will.
Knowing well where lay his greatest treasure,
Years on years of love he labored still.
How Might a Spirit Settle in the Wind
How might a spirit settle in the wind?
After death, how might a soul find peace?
Love lasts long after lips and laughter cease,
Leaving only memories behind.
Out of longings, one might linen spin,
Weaving well the welkin edged with fleece.
Each spirit must from wandering seek release,
Else ever through the weary midnights wend,
Not resting till love's angels dark descend.

I Am the Mirror of Our Love

I am the mirror of our love,
And you its brazen fire.
To me our love is merely joy;
To you it is your breath.
I am the marker that must move;
You, the fixed desire.
You are what I most enjoy;
I am life or death.
And now you must be put to sleep,
And I remain awake
With years of love ahead of me,
And many pets to go.
But I'm the one who can't help weep
While you, just for my sake,
Come rest your chin upon my knee
And beg to share my woe.

Death for One Ought Not Mean Death for Two

Death for One Ought Not Mean Death for Two
Death for one ought not mean death for two.
We cannot die of grief unless we will.
Love requires us to love life still,
Lest love be less than life and death are due.
We cannot choose but choose for others, too,
For what we choose does what we are distill,
And open fields with inner sweetness fill,
That those who pass might hope or faith renew.
So may your love for loved ones that remain
Bring you through this season of despair
To some unquiet, sad, but gentle spring.
Emerging from your chrysalis of pain,
May you find a new world blossomed there
With new songs bittersweet that pleasure bring.
Death Is like a Car
Death is like a car
That disappears around a curve,
Or like an ancient custom
That we've failed to preserve.
The car continues going
Even though we cannot see,
And the custom just remains
Itself, outside of memory.
Death is a relation
To a certain time and place;
To Eternity it's nothing
In a line of endless grace.
I've loved you all so much
That I've known Eternity,
Vast and never ending
Deep within the thing that's me.
Time is like a river
And love a clear, still lake
That holds the sky within it,
Crystalline and yet opaque.
And I have had that gift
In an abundance that is rare,
With you and with my husband
Who's both gone and everywhere.
I feel the awesome beauty
Of the end of earthly breath.
I've had a rich, full life
And now a peaceful, shining death.
Diabetes Tells Us We're Machines
Diabetes tells us we're machines,
Intended to exist but for a time.
All that brought us pleasure in our prime
Breaks down to prove the metal of our means.
Eventually, all of us must die,
Though, perhaps, not quite so bit-by-bit.
Each soul must see of life the whole of it,
So as to know of death the reason why.

Care to Come with Me to Outer Space

Care to Come with Me to Outer Space
Care to come with me to outer space?
On wings of will we fly across the void,
Landing in a wilderness of wonders.
Unchain yourselves from now! The present plunders
More than you imagine, dreams destroyed
By labyrinths no longing can retrace.
Ultimately, one pursues the grace
Sought by the heart, or finds oneself employed
Doing what must one's sweet substance squander.
As in my time, great seas, of sails devoid,
Yet beckon to the winds that guide the race.
Challenging the Veil Does Not Come Cheap
Challenging the veil does not come cheap.
One gets to know the provenance of hunger,
Living off the energy of wonder,
Unwilling to trade ecstasy for sleep.
More than life, one must want to be
Bestride the instant of the revelation,
Uniting image and imagination,
Seeing first what now the world might see.
Dread and longing dance across one's dreams,
Alive with hope for charismatic schemes.
Years wearied, wasted, wait impatiently.
Changes Find Their Agent in Obsession
Changes find their agent in obsession.
Old visions do not yield but to a sea.
Life is myth undone by mystery.
Underneath the truth lies the expression.
Meaning is the mask of history,
Best worn by those in undisturbed possession.
Ultimately, there is no progression.
Sing, then, of change, and savor what will be!

There Is No Better Bonus than Just You

There Is No Better Bonus than Just You
There is no bonus better than just you,
Of more immediate and lasting worth.
This season of glad tidings and great girth
Has resonance in all the good you do.
Even though the turning of the Earth
Brings forth hopes and resolutions new,
Of sovereigns singular and bosses few
Sing only of an annual rebirth,
Songs of gentle hearts and grateful mirth.
Though This May Be Our Christmas Last
Though this may be our Christmas last,
It is a time of cheer.
We dance within a theater vast,
Yet live from year to year.
All that we have shared remains
Within when we are gone,
Just as a house, though long since dust,
Might well remain a home.
And so we lift this glass of joy
Once more on Christmas Eve,
For time ought not such times destroy,
Nor gifts untimely leave.
What Does Santa Bring for Daddies
What does Santa bring for daddies,
Too old to want a toy?
Wallets, watches, ties, and sweaters
Don't make for much joy.
What do daddies want for Christmas,
Really, in their hearts?
So perfect that they'd shriek like kids
Once the shredding starts?
Oh, Daddy! Is there anything
You want beneath the tree?
Other than, of course, to watch
Me open gifts for me?
But life must bubble on its way
And pleasure be put on,
For neither sorrow nor delight
Is ever left alone.
And, like the Virgin, we must smile
With enigmatic grace
As we receive the fragile gift
That nothing can replace.

I'm Your Christmas Tree, All Brightly Lit

I'm your Christmas tree, all brightly lit,
Hung with angels, colored balls, and elves.
Underneath my boughs your presents sit,
If you've behaved yourselves.
Why must we wait till early Christmas morn
To open up our brand-new games and toys?
Why gifts for us the day that Christ was born
If we're good girls and boys?
Now listen to your Christmas tree: I'm wise
In all the ways of faith that you must know.
I'm here because of what I symbolize:
Green through ice and snow.
There is a world beyond what we can see
Where, by grace of God, we can receive
God's greatest gift: to live eternally,
If only we believe.
Eternal life is what God gave to you
In sending down His son to live on Earth.
This was His gift, so Santa brings gifts, too,
To celebrate Christ's birth.
The baby Jesus got gifts on this day
Because, like any child, He loved to play.
And so God wants to share this special joy
With every girl and boy.
Believe God loves you as your parents do,
And takes great joy in giving gifts to you.
Live well and love, and evergreen like me,
You'll live eternally.

So Let Them Be, Who Have Had Sex with Children

So Let Them Be, Who Have Had Sex with Children
So let them be, who have had sex with children!
And turn Your rage on those who turned their eyes,
Intending to defend Your church with lies!
Nor were they ever fit for Your dominion!
These hypocrites are far worse than the poor
Polluted souls they moved from place to place,
Avid to avoid undue disgrace,
Trafficking in silence to be sure.
Remember them when You return! For they,
Instead of proper penance, yet remain
Cardinals, bishops, princes in Your name,
Knowing well what price they ought to pay!

Sister Margaret
Sister Margaret's been here many years
In service to the children and the Lord.
She is one lovely note within a chord
Too vast and beautiful for human ears.
Even those who've carved out bright careers
Remember long and fondly one who poured
More love into their hearts than they could hoard,
A river sweeping through their childhood tears;
Remember, too, the beauty of a life
Given as an act of charity,
All of it, not one desire held back.
Ruled by need, they pause in harmony,
Even in the midst of daily strife,
To see in her a passion that they lack.

Happy Sixth Anniversary

Happy sixth anniversary!
A marriage is a mirror window
Placed to maximize the view.
Passion turns to paradigm;
Years turn love to symbiosis.
So do lovers by osmosis
In each other dwell in time.
X-rays show that love imbues
The heart with angels, arms akimbo,Having come from joys to be.

Here There Are No Angels of Despair
Here there are no angels of despair.
Arrayed in choirs, they sing only of joy.
Performing for the sheer delight of being,
Poised between the act of sight and seeing,
Yet infinite, yet of this earth, they toy
Scholastically with being here nor there,
Eden's hosts, though none the worse for wear,
Come down from that sweet hilltop, anguish fleeing.
On those they light who for another care,
Now filling with their ecstasy the air,
Dear hints of bliss no evil can destroy.
